How to Apply Dry Flake

Metal flake can be applied over any color. Black and darker colors/tones will give you the brightest results. Black absorbs light and allows the flash from your flake to shine through. For a softer metal flake application use a matching or lighter base color/tone.

Spraying Dry Flake

Step 1 (Prep):  Prepare your surface as is required before applying paint.

Step 2 (Grip):  Apply a grip coating of your clear substrate and allow the clear to "flash". Flash time will vary depending on your clear coat and air temperatures. Typical flash times are about 20 minutes. 

Step 3 (Wet):  After your primary/grip coat has flashed, apply a second wet coat of clear. Do not wait for this coat to flash.

Step 4 (Flake):  Using your dry flake sprayer, apply an even coat of dry metal flake over the wet clear. This step must be completed before the clear has flashed. Watch for metal flake bouncing off your surface. This will indicate that you have reached flashing point of your clear.

Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have reached your desired coverage. This is your experiment phase. Try coating  with various sizes and colors of metal flake to get the look and sparkle you want. Be sure to check manufacture recommendations for min/max number of coats for your clear substrate (See step 4). You don't want your awesome new mix to shrink, crack or run. 

Step 5 (Bury): Metal flake can be small to "chunky" be sure to bury your custom metal flake design with enough clear to get a smooth surface. Be sure to plan for your bury coats while layering your metal flake.

Be careful not to damage your metal flake while prepping between clear coat. Colored metal flake can scratch and tear revealing the silver center.
